Iran President Helicopter Crash News Highlights: Iranian authorities on Monday confirmed that President Ebrahim Raisi died on Sunday after his helicopter crashed in a fog-shrouded mountain region. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei declared five days of public mourning after the crash. Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian also died in the crash along with seven others, including the crew, bodyguards and political and religious officials. Gulf nations, India, Afghanistan, NATO and the EU as well as the US extended their condolences to Iran following the death of Raisi. The Iranian regime has appointed Mohammad Mokhber, 68, to assume interim duties ahead of elections within 50 days. Iran’s one-time top nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri was appointed as acting foreign minister.

The United States on Monday offered condolences after the president of arch-enemy Iran died in a helicopter crash and said it saw no immediate security impact from Ebrahim Raisi’s death, as per a report by news agency AFP.

“I don’t necessarily see any broader regional security impact,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters, moments before a State Department statement offered “official condolences.”
